Succeed As An Entrepreneur: Tips from a pilgrim

I just had a conversation with a fascinating man who walked 1,200 miles to Rome, along the ancient Pilgrimage route the Via Francigena. I loved his story, and much of what he shared is great advice for business owners and entrepreneurs, too.

Why do we do it? He explained that some of us are marked out to always want to challenge ourselves and the world we inhabit.

Many of my clients choose the daily uncertainty and toil with motivation and self-belief of being an entrepreneur for the challenge of who they must become on route to their vision.

90% of any limitation is in the head.

I asked him how he prepared for the rigours of the walk and he said he expected challenges, but trusted that he is intelligent enough to find solutions and tenacious enough to never give up.

You also don’t have to do this alone. He told me about how he knocked on people’s doors, some nights when accommodation was hard to find and, was amazed at how people were prepared to help him. You need to be prepared to ask, but don’t be daunted by a few No’s along the way.

So, to succeed in any venture, you need to…

  • Commit to a vision,
  • Put yourself out there
  • Be flexible along the way
  • Ask for what you want

I have learnt to recognise opportunities to step beyond my comfort zone in the pursuit of things that bring me true fulfilment – it was a small tweak that has ended up making a significant difference. We now speak on a regular basis and Simon has become the voice which says “you can do this”.
