Shred Your To Do List

You may think I am crazy, but seriously this might be the best productivity hack you ever use!

I shredded mine 3 years ago and I don’t ever work with a to-do list. I found it exhausting, as it was often longer at the end of the day than at the beginning. The never-ending list felt like a testimony to my inefficiency and lack of focus. The thought of it stressed me out.

Only when I realized that I prioritised my to-do list over any new ideas or opportunities, did I decide that it had to go…

Recently, I worked with a client who had a to-do list with 300 items on it. It was a beautiful spreadsheet, but I challenged him to delete it.

Once he got over the panic of losing control, he pressed delete. When I asked how he felt about it, he replied:
I have got so much time to be creative and work on the ideas I’m passionate about, he said. But what do I do with those things that have to be done, like my tax return?”

This is when I suggested that he get an assistant, as his time is too valuable to spend on those things.
As an entrepreneur, you need to focus on possibility and creating your vision.

On a recent follow-up, he said, “I procrastinate less and get more done.” Wasn’t it Steven Covey who said do things that are important instead of the urgent things?

I have learnt to recognise opportunities to step beyond my comfort zone in the pursuit of things that bring me true fulfilment – it was a small tweak that has ended up making a significant difference. We now speak on a regular basis and Simon has become the voice which says “you can do this”.
