Dreading Going Back To Work?

Professionals who are dreading returning to work should consider these two questions. Business-as-usual has been disrupted for quite a while now, but as things have slowly opened up again:

  • Is the thought of returning to work filling you with dread?
  • Does a part of you wish you could stay away longer?

Consider these two questions.

  1. The dread you feel, is it because there’s too much of something you don’t want in your work? Something could be frustrating or even toxic about your job, such as conflict, pressure, or moral issues?
  2.  Or, do you dread returning because something you desire is missing from your work? Work may not be fulfilling you in some sense, such as not challenging you, not meaningful, or purposeful enough.

Depending on your answer, it is, of course, possible to create more of what you want within your current role and make the job a better fit. Likewise, you may be able to tackle some of the negative aspects – if you have the will and motivation.

However, if you’re dreading work for both reasons, it might be time to manage your exit and start to create a future that is both stimulating and worthwhile and a true expression of your values and desires.

I have learnt to recognise opportunities to step beyond my comfort zone in the pursuit of things that bring me true fulfilment – it was a small tweak that has ended up making a significant difference. We now speak on a regular basis and Simon has become the voice which says “you can do this”.
